Let's Talk About Hair
By Jennifer D. Milano

Your wedding day is fast approaching and maybe you haven’t picked a hairstyle! Where should you start? Here’s some ideas:

First, and hopefully before you buy your veil, you need to talk with a stylist and get advice about what styles would best suit you on your day. Don’t wear an up-do just because all your friends did or you see it in pictures all of the time; the question is: Does it look good on you? Talk with the stylist you’re using about what styles you think look good on you too. If you completely disagree with the stylist, you may want to find a different stylist. Also, don’t wear your hair in a way that is just totally different from your usual style; you still want to look like the woman your husband-to-be fell in love with. For example, I always wear my hair down. I kept it down on my wedding day. Also, my hair is a little bit wavy but is mostly straight. I usually don’t hot curl it, so instead of trying to force my straight hair into curls, I had it perfectly straightened (with a blow dryer and hot iron). At first I wanted to have it wavy or curly, but then I considered my hair...it really doesn’t hold curls! How sad would I be to spend hours having it curled to find that the style wouldn’t make it past the ceremony? The only other option would be to use a ton of hair spray, but who wants to run their fingers through that on the wedding night?

Second, you need your veil. Much of the style will be determined by your veil. If you haven’t gone shopping for your veil yet, you need to consider what kind of hairdo you will wear on your wedding day and make it clear to the store you are getting your veil from. Remember you can have your veil made at many bridal boutiques for about $130-$200. That’s what I did, and my veil was very beautiful. I picked a tiara first and they added the rest of the veil. I even had them put small pearls throughout the veil. The good thing about having it made is you can tell them exactly how long you would like it and they can give you advice based on what your dress looks like. Of course you should have your dress prior to buying your veil.

Third, bring the veil in and have your first hair rehearsal! Play around, try different ways of wearing your hair. Make sure not to get any hair products on your veil if possible. Be sure to try wearing it up and down just so you can see what it looks like. Some veils will lend well to hair being down and some to hair being up. As I mentioned earlier, you should try to consider the hair style before buying the veil.

Fourth, ask your stylist about color. You might be considering color or highlights so start early. Again, don’t go and dye your hair black if you’ve been a red head all of your life. Your wedding day is not the time to try outrageous experiments. This is the time to look sweet and natural. Chances are, if you take a big hair style or color risk for your wedding day, you will be uncomfortable.

The last thing your should do for your hair is be sure to eat right and take your vitamins because your hair loves a healthy diet! Yogurt, eggs, nuts, fruits, and vegetables will all help your hair and skin look great! Try home remedies that can’t hurt like putting honey in your hair and washing it out after about 15 minutes. Also, for dry scalp, you can rub aloe vera into your scalp and wash out after 5 minutes. Try the egg, honey and olive oil mix for about 15 minutes. Doing home remedies like that are part of the fun of being a bride-to-be! Try inviting the bridesmaids over for hair treatment night too!

Good luck! And may you have a good hair day!
